SB & Q: Complete Discography Sutherland Brothers & Quiver from the Beat of the Street album cover

Below are the albums I own or know about from assorted sources. Some may still available in vinyl format, either through a local second hand dealer or on the Web, although access may depend on the country you are trying to buy them in. Columbia/CBS (now Sony) did run a trickle-feed release policy for CDs with the Rewind series, although they stopped before the last two albums, which, despite being magnificent, are less well known and so did not merit conversion to CD, in Sony's view. However, that has been solved, with the mantle being taken up by Evangeline Records (Acadia) and, later, Lemon Records.  Where material is available from Amazon, I've placed a link to it. If you click through, a small commission will fall my way at no additional expense to yourself, thus contributing to the cost of upkeep of this fan site. I should warn you: some of the CDs are out of print and have now become quite rare and Amazon resellers are charging obscene amounts for them - as much as £75. However, more recently, Talking Elephant Records started a reissue programme, which has covered almost the full range of albums (except Beat of the Street, which is not without their trying).

As for the solo albums, the best way to get hold of either of the earlier ones by Iain may be through second hand shops or record fairs, where your efforts may result in pleasant surprises. Gavin's current release should be easily obtainable and it's still possible to obtain his previous album, although fans have written to say that downloading his first one is no longer possible. I have a vinyl copy anyway... Quiver's old vinyl records have found their way onto CD recently and there are options for getting recent work by Willie Wilson and Tim Renwick.

I've broken down the listings under headings: Compilations - Studio Albums - Solo Albums (Iain & Gavin) - Albums by Quiver, Tim Renwick & The Bucket Boys - singles, etc

Hover your mouse over the "View Details" area to see full details of track listings & personnel.

Compilations

Only one official compilation was ever released on vinyl in the UK and it is no longer available. A compilation CD, containing tracks selected by Steve Chapman and approved by Gavin & Iain, was planned for release by Sony after the individual albums had been issued. It eventually came out, after a substantial delay, in June 2002. I am not sure how heavily it was marketed by Sony, since the guy in my local record store laughed at me when I asked him if he would be stocking it! The record shop, incidentally, is now closed. Group members are as listed for these tracks on the studio albums (below).

If you really want to put pen to paper, it might be worth haranguing the BBC about its collection of Sutherlands' recordings, including the live concerts broadcast in the 70s. I know they still have at least one of them, because they broadcast it again on Radio 2 a few years ago. Perhaps 6 Music, the BBC digital radio station can be persuaded to broadcast them. Details of all original BBC broadcasts are given in the On The Radio page. There are also some recordings from radio broadcasts made in the US.

There is another "compilation" CD available that I can only assume is a pirate one. It contains a mixture of early tracks, ones that were unavailable because they appeared on albums not released in certain countries, and a song taken from a BBC broadcast. The sound quality is, at best, variable and some songs are clipped at the start or contain terrible crackles from the vinyl recording. Even the back cover photo is a copy of the one from Beat of the Street! I would not recommend spending your hard-earned cash on it (as I did).

Along with the complication of having different versions of various albums released on either side of the Atlantic, there were several European versions of albums & compilations. One example is a Dutch compilation (left), released in 1976 (Island 27767ET) and containing:

You Got Me Anyway, Sailing, Saviour in the Rain, Bad Loser, The Pie, Real Love, Have You Had a Vision, Lifeboat, Not Fade Away, Midnight Avenue, Lady Like You, World In Action, Dream Kid.

It's interesting to compare this with the track listing for Sailing (above), released in the UK. Different countries, different tastes. The compilation was by Steve Chapman and the cover has a picture of the group by Claude van Heye, with Gavin holding a seagull. The company that released this has remained a good contact for Gavin and they released his second solo album (see below).

Studio Albums

One of the complications with SB&Q albums is that in certain cases, the version released in the UK was different from the one released in the USA. And, of course, when CD reissues were done, Sony had the problem of deciding which version to put out.

Solo Albums

After the group split up, both Iain and Gavin made solo albums, with each contributing to the other's work. Gavin continues to record, while Iain had only produced the two LPs, until recently....

Albums by Quiver & Members

Quiver made two LPs before they joined up to form SB&Q. Since then, Tim Renwick has released a number of albums, three of which are shown here, and The Bucket Boys, which featured Willie Wilson and Tim Renwick,  released three CDs. Please note: There is an album called Cous Cous, available on Amazon that comes up when you do a search for Quiver. This is by a group called Quiver, but it is not the group from the '70s. It's an Australian group that  has recently issued an album. No harm to them, but don't go buying that CD if you're looking for the band that became part of SB&Q.

Melody Maker freebie 1 Melody Maker issued a free CBS sampler album in 1975. The Suths were the first track on side 2 with When the Train Comes. Other artists on the first sampler included Bruce Springsteen, Earth Wind & Fire, Bill Withers, Dave Mason and The Flying Burrito Brothers. The second sampler featured, among others, Aerosmith, Labelle, Moon, Blue Oyster Cult, Ted Nugent and Jeff Beck. Melody Maker repeated the offer, courtesy of CBS, in 1976, when  the Sutherland Brothers & Quiver track that led side 2 was Slipstream. Melody Maker freebie 2
